Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change my dentures?

Generally speaking, dentures last around five to seven years. Over time, your jaw and gums change shape. In the short-term, these changes can be accommodated by small adjustments to remodel your denture. However, after several years you will need a new set of dentures to accurately fit your changing jaw and gums.

Can I claim for health insurance?

Dentures Direct is registered with most health insurance funds. If desired, we can give you an item number for any of our services, prior to treatment. You can then call your health insurance provider to find out exactly how much you would be reimbursed.

What if I chip or break my denture?

Do NOT attempt any home repairs if you have damaged your denture! Call us immediately and arrange for an appointment for us to fix your denture.

How do I care for my dentures?

Keep your dentures healthy and hygienic by regular cleaning, and ensuring that your dentures are free of food and debris. We recommend that you clean your dentures daily in a mild, soapy water with a soft toothbrush. Place denture/s in  a denture box overnight. Removing the denture from your mouth for at least six hours a day will give your gums a chance to rest.

Once a week, we recommend you soak your denture overnight in a good-quality denture cleaner that your dental prosthetist recommends.

It is also essential that you adhere to your check-ups with your dental prosthetist to ensure that a good fit is maintained. This will also prevent the possibilities of any unnecessary discomfort, sores or infections developing in your mouth.

What is a denture reline?

A denture reline is where the denture is assessed and found that the fitting surface of the denture is not a true replica of the surface of the gums. A new layer of acrylic is then processed onto the current denture to reline it. This will improve the fit and stability of the denture.

What is a Dental Prosthetist?

Dental Prosthetists are qualified dental practitioners who have completed extensive training. First, they become qualified as a dental technician, who works via referral from a dentist. Once qualified, and after practising as a technician for a certain period, they may study further to become a dental prosthetist. A dental prosthetist is registered to consult with patients directly, without deferring to a dentist.

At Dentures Direct, we have two dental prosthetists; both are members of the Australian Dental Prosthetists’ Association.
